3. Guideline for risk communication concerning endocrine
disruptors
This Guideline should be observed in preparation of the
Endocrine Disruptor Website, leaflets and brochures for
publicity, and publication of research results, including the
Supplement II to Interim Report of the Advisory Committee on
Health Effects of Environmental Disruptors.
(1) Contents
Selection of contents to be communicated should be made taking
into account the wide variety of the audience in:
- Age,
- Knowledge already acquired, and
- Urgency in information need.
Considering these factors, the following information should be
provided.
[Basic information on the endocrine disruptor issue]
- Background
- Scientific findings
- Explanation of frequently used terms
[Information on risk
and its prediction]
- Information on the evaluation of risk, including severity of
hazard and exposure and high-risk populations, if any,
- Information on risk management, e.g. measures for reducing
risk.
The concept is risk is not properly understood by many. It is
therefore advisable to begin the communication with explanation
of basic concepts, such as risk, hazard, or risk identification.
Widespread misunderstanding, if any, must be corrected by
appropriate accounts.
